My herbal reference book says just to keep it away from the face for children under 6, but some people don’t believe you should use peppermint on a child under 6 at all. You’ll have to do your own research.

When experiencing a fever, peppermint essential oil can help alleviate some of the discomforts by providing a cooling effect on the body. This is the reason why people commonly apply cold and flu balms containing menthol to their chest and back during illnesses.

What I do is I take some olive oil (you can use any carrier oil) and mix about 2 drops of peppermint oil per teaspoon of the carrier oil in a glass bowl. Every time I’ve used peppermint oil for fevers, it has worked within 30 minutes, reducing the fever so the child is comfortable and can sleep.
